 5. Newsgroups and Subscription E-mail lists

There is still no Usenet Newsgroup dedicated to biological recording. The following Newsgroups are available through many ISPs, and can be accessed via your normal e-mail reader:

  • uk.rec.natural-history - General natural history. Active.
  • uk.rec.birdwatching - Active.
  • sci.bio.entomology.homoptera - world-wide interest.
  • sci.bio.entomology.lepidoptera - world-wide interest.
  • sci.bio.entomology.misc - world-wide interest, mostly N America.
  • sci.bio.botany - world-wide interest, active and erudite.
  • sci.bio.herp
  • sci.bio.systematics
  • scot.birds

5.ii E-mail Subscription Groups and web-based Discussion Fora:
E-mail subscription lists and web sites with discussion fora are increasingly catering for specific recording interests. To help you through the maze of sites and lists currently available, here are a few that NFBR is aware of:-

  • Arcview GIS discussion group. c315members. Public archives
  • BRCNET Egroup managed by Monks Wood BRC to provide a forum for exchange of news and information on recording schemes for the fauna and flora of Britain and Ireland. c.55 members. Archives for members only.
  • Beetles-British Isles An active but private group with archived messages for members only. 250+ members.
  • BWARS Web Forum (Bees, Wasps & Ants Society)  c.25 members
  • FENSCORE email list for Natural Sciences Collections Research. To join list please email Majordomo@mcc.ac.uk with 'subscribe fenscore your name' in main text of the message.
  • Fungi-britishisles Forum for people interested in the Fungi of the British Isles. Archives for members only. c.70 members).
  • Local Record Centres' Technical Forum NEW - separate web-based forum for technical matters, including: GIS, MapMate, Recorder and "General". Archives viewable without registration.
  • MapMate egroup. (Access to invited members only). Send a request to join to: MM-Users-owner ATyahoogroups.com
  • NBN Forum Lobby - discussion fora on the NBN web-site
  • NFBR Members' List.   For the discussion of all recording matters. Only NFBR Members may post messages, but discussion archives visible to all. To request membership, simply send an email to direct to Craig Slawson stating your name and/or organisation. email: infoATstaffs-ecology.org.uk (Spam avoidance: Change AT to the normal  @ symbol.)
  • NFBR LRCs A discussion egroup for local record centre (LRC) managers and staff about LRC and recording related matters. Currently free to all to join. Will later be exclusively for NFBR LRC staff. c.60 members
  • RECORDER 3 User eGroup For users of "old RECORDER". Open to anyone. Public archives. Currently unmoderated.c 90 members.
  • RECORDER 2000 active email group set up to allow Recorder 2002 users to share information, advice and mutual support. It is also designed to allow JNCC to communicate news and updates to users.
  • UKBotany This email list aims to enable anyone with an interest in plants growing in the wild in Britain and Ireland to communicate with other people interested in the subject. c.200 members. Archives for members only.
  • UK Flora Writers - for those involved in the research, planning, production or promotion of a local flora, plant checklist, interactive CD, web-based flora or other regional botanical publication. c.45 members. Public archives.
  • Uk-Leps This list is dedicated to Moths and Butterflies of the British Isles, and for sightings information, and butterfly and moth sites. 450+ members. Archives for members only. Very active.
  • UKMoths To discuss Macro's and Micro's of the UK, recent catches, identification, news and any other relevent topics. Discussion archives are public.  c500+ members. Very active.
  • UK-TrueBugs c75 members. Archives for members only.
  • UK-Hoverflies c.130 members. Archives for members only.
  • UKWildlife c300 members.Archives for members only.
  • UK-Grasshoppers-Crickets c.60 members. Archives for members only

Groups owners are strongly urged to make their archives publicly available.
(Hint: If you subscribe to these groups you may receive large numbers of emails in your Inbox.
